Benefits Of Medical Marijuana

Marijuana Makes Me HappyThere are many benefits of medical marijuana. Marijuana is a natural substance that may have a bad reputation due to smearing campaigns that have gone on for decades. However, the truth is that there are many benefits of medical marijuana. In addition to the medical benefits, marijuana also has many other useful benefits. For instance, in its cannabis form, it forms an incredibly powerful cloth. In fact, while President George H.W. Bush pushed against any legalization of marijuana during his presidency, his life was saved in the Second World War. Guess how? By a parachute that had lines made of, you guessed it, marijuana.

It isn’t about the many uses of marijuana though. It is about the health benefits of marijuana. There are many benefits of medical marijuana, which is helping to get the drug legalized throughout the United States and elsewhere.

History Of Marijuana

Medical marijuana dates back thousands of years, with many cultures using the plant to help with a number of ailments. The characteristics of marijuana make it useful for reducing nausea and treating painful diseases.

Marijuana was consumed in Taiwan as early as 10,000 years ago. Emperor Shen-Nung touted the benefits of cannabis way back in 2737 BC. Today, cannabis is one of the fundamental herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

Ancient Egypt, India, and Greece, also used medical marijuana with a great deal of documentation to its health benefits. Get this – including treating pain during childbirth! The ancient Greeks used cannabis to dress wounds and sores on horses, and treat nose bleeds and expels tapeworms in humans. The Ancient Egyptians used it to relieve the pain of hemorrhoids.

While it has been banned in many states for a very long time, by mid-2014, 23 states allow for the use of medical marijuana.

Benefits Of Medical Marijuana

Benefits of Medical MarijuanaThere are many conditions that medical marijuana can treat. Let’s take a look at some of the many benefits of medical marijuana.

1. Glaucoma: The serious eye disease known as glaucoma causes increased pressure in the eyeball, which in turn causes a loss of vision. Early 1970 studies, according to the National Eye Institute, have found that marijuana, when smoked, helped to lower the pressure in the eyeball to a normal pressure. It was for those suffering from glaucoma. The use of marijuana has helped to slow the progression of the disease, thereby preventing blindness due to the disease.

2. Lung health: For those who smoke tobacco, the impact on the lungs is extremely serious. Amazingly, despite also being a form of smoking, medical marijuana has been found to not only impair lung function, but helps to increase lung capacity. Researchers found that the risk factors of heart disease in 5,115 adults, over the course of 20 years, decreased with pot use as compared tobacco smokers.

3. Epilepsy: This condition is a very serious one, but a study at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003 found that marijuana extract helped rid rats of seizures for 10 hours. It’s because of THC and its ability to bind the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and increasing relaxation.

4. Dravet’s Syndrome: This rare condition causes seizures and delays in childhood development. In a documentary called Weed, a family related how their five-year-old daughter had as many as 300 seizures a week but after receiving cannabidiol her seizures went down to one every seven days. Forty other children with the same condition also saw a drastic increase in the number of seizures.

5. Cancer: When we think of medical marijuana, we think of it treating nausea from chemotherapy, but in fact, it can also stop cancer from spreading. A chemical called CBD prevents cancer from spreading according to researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center, who conducted a study in 2007. Cannabidiol stopped the cancer by turning off a specific gene, which cancer cells use to make more copies of.

6. Alzheimer’s Disease: This disease is very serious and as the population ages, more and more people will have it. There is hope though, thanks to a study done by Scripps Research Institute. The study, done in 2006, found that THC slows the formation of amyloid plaques, which block enzymes in the brain that make them. These plaques are what kill brain cells, allowing Alzheimer’s to progress.

7. Leeuwenhoek’s Disease: This disease, which causes non-stop fluttering and spasms muscles in the abdomen, can be treated with medical marijuana. The use of marijuana has a better effect than stronger, prescribed medications. The attacks can be calmed almost immediately after marijuana consumption.

8. Hepatitis C: The treatment for hepatitis C is very harsh, and there are a lot of bad side effects that can last for months on end. The side effects of treatments are so harsh that many don’t even finish. However, one of the many benefits of medical marijuana has shown to be highly adept at treating hepatitis C, and increasing the treatment effectiveness of other drugs. In 2006, the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology discovered that 86 percent of patients who smoked marijuana were able to complete their therapy, while only 29 percent of non-smokers did. In addition, over half of hepatitis C patients who smoked marijuana got their viral levels down low, and were able to keep them low. It is in sharp contrast to eight percent of non-smokers.

9. Inflammatory Bowel Disease: This condition, which can be very serious in the Crohn’s Disease form, is treated quite well with medical marijuana. In a study done in 2010, The University of Nottingham found that THC and cannabidiol were able to interact with cells in the body. They have a role in the functions of our guts and immune system. It found that the THC helped to increase the permeability of the intestines, which allowed the proper bacteria in. Going back to Crohn’s Disease, marijuana may cure the disease. In a study done in Israel, one of the benefits of medical marijuana is that smoking it reduced the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease in 10 of 11 patients, and causing a complete remission of the disease in five patients.

10. Arthritis: As we get older our fingers and joints start to hurt. Thankfully, another form of joint can come to the rescue. In a study done in 2011, it was found that those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis could have their symptoms heavily relieved thanks to marijuana. Several patients at various hospitals were given cannabinoid-based pain-relieving medicine. After two weeks, there was a huge decrease in pain and improved sleep, when compared with those who took placebos.

11. Lupus: This condition is incredibly serious, but marijuana has been shown to improve the symptoms of the disease. Some of the chemicals in marijuana has a calming impact on the immune system, which in turn helps to deal with the symptoms of Lupus.

12. Parkinson’s Disease: As we grow older the risk of Parkinson’s Disease increases. Once again, a study in Israel has shown that marijuana smoking can reduce pain and tremors from Parkinson’s Disease while improving the motor skills of patients.

13. Stroke: When we go through a stroke, the brain can be severely damaged. Once you have a stroke, there is the risk of further strokes causing a number of serious problems and even death. Amazingly though, a study at the University of Nottingham has found that marijuana can protect the brain from damage from a struck by reducing the impacted area from the stroke. In addition, this same research has found that there is a chance that marijuana could help protect the brain of individuals from a number of conditions, including concussions. In a study published in Cerebral Cortex, marijuana use lessened the bruising of the brain and helped to heal the brain. As a result, many are calling for the NFL to stop testing for marijuana because of its ability to protect the brain from concussions. NFL Commissioner Goodell has even said he will allow athletes to smoke marijuana if research can back it up.

14. Nightmares: It is not a medical condition or a disease, but nightmares can cause serious psychological trauma for people who have them on a regular basis. In several studies, it has been found that due to the drug’s ability to impact the sleep cycle, it can prevent deep sleeps that cause nightmares. On the flipside, it can also cause problems with fatigue. Nonetheless, many see it as a possible treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Medical marijuana is becoming legal throughout the country and the world thanks to its ability to help people dealing with serious medical conditions. It appears the benefits of medical marijuana have started to gain acceptance in the medical community. Many call cannabis a wonder plant for its ability to create strong fibers heal medical conditions and improve many other facets of our lives. While marijuana is seen as a drug of drop-outs, it may be something that can help a lot of people live the lives that they want to. From Crohn’s Disease and cancer to Parkinson’s and PTSD, the benefits of medical marijuana are slowly changing medicine around the world.
